Thumbs down Giant Tusks.... What is the issue with these?

Ok.... I'll be brief in setting the scene.
I have a certain quest from a certain centaur that requires I get 3 Giant Tusks.... from those Sadistic Giants and Nomad Giants in the Desolation.

My problem is simply this:
#1. The giants themselves are rather rare and small in number.
#2. The tusks are surreally rare besides.

Ok.... now stop me if I'm wrong about this.... but Giant Tusks, being a collector item (otherwise known by me as "bodypart").... are scaled loot, right? I should be getting the same amount in a party of 8 as in a party of 1.... right? And in theory, it shouldn't be any more rare for a giant to drop one than for an Oni in Echovald or the Jade Sea to drop their Keen Oni Talon / Claw.... right? I have had quite a few of those (the Oni loot) over my time...

... Yet with these Giant Tusks.... I have only managed to get ONE in around 50 runs through the Shattered Ravines.
Let me just check the numbers.
Team of 8...
50 runs... at ... 14 giants a run (one of which is a boss)... is about 700 giants...
.... And only one Giant Tusk.

Is this natural?
Or is some aspect of loot scaling for this item messed up?

I have been hunting these giants for days now... to almost no avail.
By comparison, the quest that required me to collect 10 shards from Graven Monoliths took me about 2 hours.... tops.
No quest should take days to complete. -_-;

[ Incidentally... might anyone be willing to sell me Giant Tusks in-game? I'm sick and tired of trying to farm the damned things. ]

I think you're just having a run of bad luck. I remember feeling the same way too though, just keep farming for them like you are, they will turn up.

What really frustrated me was that the darn horse didn't seem to want to keep mine after all that trouble, LOL.

I have 4 tusks in my storage specifically for when my characters reach that quest. The centaur doesn't take the tusks from you, so you can recycle them. I got mine as drops.

I think i have the same prob as the OP. I have 7 chars who have reached that point and who have the quest. I havnt done any special runs to get them, but so far i have had 3 Giant Tusks over all chars. I dont really care about the reward, but IMO this is kind of stupid...

They were hard to come by because of the rareity of
giants before loot scaling. I solo farmed a set of them
for my and it took me two days to get them.
Since loot scaling I don't even bother to try, even though
I have eight characters and am in The Desolation often,
I think I've only gotten two of them since scaling was
implimented.

Yeah, Giant Tusks... I think it took me days to get mine, too. But that was way before loot scaling. The trick is: Don't try to farm them. It you're looking too hard, you'll never find any. Once you stop looking for them, they'll come to you. Must be some iteration of Murphy's Law.

These things are really strange. Explored all of the desolation for my title, got no tusks. Did what GuildWiki suggested, going solo into the Shattered Ravines, and I had my 3 in ~5 mins via. wurm. Try it.

You can buy them from others. 3 tusks for 1 or 2k max. I farmed mine and sold them after I completed quest.

did the same got 3 tusks in storage for my chars when they reach that quest. But indeed they don't drop frequently. Needed some runs to get them too.

I can't get to a Wurm Spoor solo without insects spawning.... and since the Wurm Spoor can't be activated with enemies too close, that means I have no choice but to fight the insects.... and no matter how well I do, I cannot take down the entire swarm of insects solo with my Assassin (if I'm lucky I can kill half of them before they finish me off).
I've only managed once to get to the Spoor with a party of 4. I can only consistantly fight my way there with a party of at least 6. At that kind of level I might as well just make do with a full party.

Plus I'm not very good at fighting solo in a Judundu. I need at least a little backup [that said, my heroes can take down hoardes in hard mode in Judundu without my help].

Took me about 30 minutes. Just headed into the southern entrance of Crystal Overlook with hench, got to a wurm spore and flagged the hench away to solo some Giants. Not exactly anything technical to killing mobs of 2 Giants alone in a Wurm... Just kept rezoning till i had them all.

Then just transferred them around and complete the quest on all my chars... still have them in storage.

Ironically, I've always gotten a lot of these tusks and very few Keen Oni Claws. Go figure.

Crystal Overlook?

Is it worth noting that I've barely set foot off the "main quest path" in the desolation? I've been hunting in the Shattered Ravines.

Does it make a difference?
